Serena Williams stunned, Eugenie Bouchard through at Family Circle

Montreal's Eugenie Bouchard advanced to the third round of the Family Circle Cup on Tuesday, a day which saw No. 1 Serena Williams lose to the 78th ranked player in the world.

Bouchard, seeded sixth in the tournament, drubbed Russia's Alla Kudryavtseva by scores of 6-2, 6-0 in Charleston, S.C.

The Westmount, Que., native needed just 58 minutes to get past a player who once reached the fourth round of Wimbledon, but has slipped to 117th in the world. Bouchard is ranked 20th.

Bouchard, who received a bye into the second round, will next play the winner of a match between Venus Williams of the United States and Scheepers of South Africa.

Venus's younger sister, Serena, was shocked 6-4, 6-4 by Jana Cepelova of Slovakia. Cepelova, who's never made it past the third round of a Grand Slam, came into the week ranked 78th in the world.

Serena Williams was coming off her seventh Sony Open title last week, which was capped off a by a win over Li Na.
